Hello, Nice to Meet You…

My name is Gaby, short for Gabrielle (Gab-bree-elle), and I am a writer. A writer who loves to write down words that mean a lot to me and can relate to you or anyone who will be reading this.

My name was passed on to me from my great grandfather from my dad’s side, and his name is spelled and pronounced exactly the way it is now. While growing up I never knew the importance behind a name, so if someone pronounced my name in the wrong way, I would not correct them on how to say it. As a young kid I opted for the convenient way and told them “I go by Gaby” as I thought it sounded cool and less of a hassle to keep correcting whoever said my name wrong.

After many years now, people still pronounce my full name wrong except this time I correct them. Why do I correct them today and not back then as a kid? Because I understand now that it is not only a name given to you, but a name that also identifies who you are as a person. Your name is also related to who gave you the name or a name that was passed down from generations to keep alive. It is part of your family history. It is a piece of your legacy that you will leave behind with your family and with your friends after we leave this planet. It is what keeps our memory alive.

So, be courageous and correct those who say your name wrong because it does matter in your life.

My name is Gaby, short for Gabrielle (Gab-bree-elle), what’s your name?
