Someone Broke In! (Flash Fiction)

I finished my appointment with my therapist driving home with a wide smile on my face believing everything would be okay. I turned up the music and sang along to Taylor Swift's song 'Bejeweled' to radiate the confidence in me everyone could see, and as I drove around the corner to the street I live on I noticed the side door to the backyard was wide open. It was strange to me, why would my family leave the side door open especially when we were always told to always lock all the doors?

I parallel parked in front of the driveway, then I heard a smash on a window from the side gate that was open. I rolled down my passenger window to see a clear vision and he seemed like a tall man who was swinging a bat into my window room. I was not able to see the face of who was smashing my window, so I reached for my phone and took a picture of the guy to show the police. I looked back up to see whether he was still there. He stopped smashing the windows then quickly turned his head towards me, as he saw me he gave me a furious look while yelling, "WHATCHU LOOKIN' AT? WHATCHU LOOKIN' AT?!" I was frozen in fear. I could not step on the gas pedal. But he was starting to run towards me so I had to force myself to save myself. I got a clearer image of how the man looked like, he was tan skinned with a heavy European accent who wore an olive colored shirt with cargo pants. There was a scar near his left eybrow and had piercing green eyes. He was still yelling "WHATCHU LOOKIN' AT?!" with a bat about ready to swing towards my direction. I quickly rolled up the passenger window and drove away as fast as I could. The last thing I heard was a loud thump from the back passenger window.

All I heard driving away was the anger in his voice yelling out at me, and as I looked in my rearview mirror I could see he looked mad while swinging the bat towards my direction. At that moment, all I was thinking about was getting to a safe place and letting the police know about what had happened at my house, and also asking my parents why the hell the security alarm didn't go off?

Later in the evening, I came back home with an unsettled feeling wondering whether it was safe to enter into my family's house the one place where I thought could make me feel safe. During the time I was driving away from the crazy person I called my dad about the break-in, and the answer I received was not to worry about it and to not to go to the police right now. I thought that was crazy, so I called my mom and she decided on calling the police. Apparently the guy who broke into our house was an escapee prisoner the police were searching for the past few months, so they were grateful we called the police to have them catch him in time before he ran away again.

When I entered into my house everything all seemed normal, nothing was out of place— the living room was not a mess, no writings on the wall, nothing was damged inside the house and it all seemed odd to me that nothing was a mess. So I walked through the hallway and checked on the windows, our guest room looked the same as well not one crack on the window. My parent’s window was smashed either. The only window that was broken was mine, but why was my window the only one he smashed?
